Spring Action Crutch
Walking on crutches are hard to use and painful for the patient. Therefore, my partners, Nelson, Da-Von, and Justice wanted to develop a solution to this problem to make walking on crutches less painful. We conducted patent research and found several different designs for crutches. Crutches have changed over the years, in many good ways but also have their downfalls. One of the patents we found is called US3157188A Hydraulically Actuated Crutch. The inventor had some very good ideas for his design on crutches. He tried to make the patient more comfortable by giving crutches that can be collapsed, shortened, and also full length (Farnham, 1964). This is a possible way to make the patient fitted for their crutches, and also be able to walk more comfortably on their own. “Lightweight electro-hydraulic power system which is used to vary its length in a positive manner when desired whereby the handicapped person may raise and lower himself by operating suitable fingertip hand control the operation of the hydraulic system” (Farnham, 1964). The inventor made a easier way to help a handicapped person to adjust their crutches at the push of a button instead of undoing the bolts to adjust. From one's perspective if the button was to go out is their a backup way to adjust the crutches, or would one have to buy new ones. The crutches has a motor and hydraulic hose to pump the fluid through the inventor design system (Farnham 1964). This is a good design from the fact that hydraulic power is stronger and also can hold more pounds then a pneumatic design. But also if not hooked up right the push button can be ran backward or not run at all which would lead to leaking all over the patient. Looking at the inventor picture the one flaw one would see would be that the crutch does not seem to have much support, and is shaped in a cylinder with a handle. Another patent we found was “US 4763680 A, Adjustable Crutch With S-Curve”(Adam Acosta, Sr., 1988). A standard crutch is straight up and down with a A frame for the upper portion and a leg for the bottom portion (Adam Acosta, Sr., 1988). This inventor wanted to make crutches more stable for the patient by using an S frame crutch. “S-curve defined in it to pass out, and down laterally displaced from the hip so that it will avoid the hip of an overweight person or a person with scoliosis, and still extend down to meet the ground at an approximately orthogonal angle”(Adam Acosta, Sr., 1988). The S-curve shape of the crutch can support and avoid overweight people which is helpful to the overweight patient. The inventor wanted the S-curse to make a more comfortable walk for the patient. The S-curve crutch can be adjusted more than one way, but only has three positions (Adam Acosta, Sr., 1988). This design can be a defect from the fact that the crutch can only move to three positions. The crutch itself helps with overweight patients but is also bad from the three positions that it moves too. Some patients might have a harder time using these crutches from where they are not the correct size or height for this type of crutch. This type of crutch also folds up for transportation (Adam Acosta, Sr., 1988). This is very helpful from the fact that crutches get in the way inside a vehicle and also in classrooms. The next patent was a US 20160249715 A1 Medical Crutch This crutch has a shock absorbing located at the lower portion of the crutch ( Jeffrey A. Hoogenboom, 2016). This is a good design for it to comfort the patent when walking. This will help that patient not be as sore on the crutch when in use. This design is easier to adjust more to than the original crutches you get from an ordinary place. This design also has a better rest for your armpits which will help the patient be more comfortable during their walk. This will help more but their could be a better way to add more support to the armpit rest so it's softer. Since the group had to change from a hydraulic crutch to a spring crutch the next paten will be spring actuated. The next paten the group has chosen is “Crutch with Elbow and Shank Springs US5458143A (Hugh M. Herr, 1995). In the diagram of this patent the springs are located underneath the armpit rest. This design was thought out to give away closer to the patient’s armpit which would cause the patient less stress at the armpit. The next patent the group chose was “Shock Absorber for Crutches US6286521B1 (Jorge Rehberger Olivera, 1997). The spring on this crutch is wrapped around the bottom part, inside the crutch. This is not a bad design but the crutch has no locking system to set up height for the patient. This crutch also has the original foot that comes with the original crutches they have out now.

Problem JustificationWalking on crutches are tiring, uncomfortable, and hard to use. Therefore, our group is making an spring crutch for easier, comfortable, more relaxing, and a non-painful way to use by universal crutches. Another problem Da-von has experienced is a similar feeling relating to carpal tunnel. (Spring Crutch) suitable to aid people with leg injuries/disabilities.

Mortgage Strategy
My group of researchers have decided to take a more in depth look at the modern day crutch. Crutches are used by many people as a tool to help an injury to the leg or foot heal properly while being supported. The modern crutch causes a lot of pain and inconvenience, as well as frustration. With research, my team hopes to find solutions for the problems that come along with crutches. Some of the problems that are hoped to be solved include: awkwardness, pains, bruising, as well as speeding up the healing process of the injury that has been damaged to the body parts. Solving the complications are important to us not just because our group knows the feeling, but, because these are everyday problems for user of the crutch. As my Group and Davon researched, Davon has realized that he has experienced difficulties opening doors, moving and lifting objects, sore body parts, irritation of the skin, crutch paralysis, even showing how many people developed arthritis and carpal tunnel while using an modern crutch than an spring crutch, and while evaluating and researching the crutch Da-von have notice that it progressed in back problems. Usually it takes 1-6 weeks or even more depending on the injury that has occurred requesting the support of the crutches to estimate the healing time. The group of researchers has decided to take crutches to another level. No One deserves to be in an enormous amount of pain than needs to be which is why crutches were invented in the first place. There are complaints of being sore, tired, and a awkward feeling and discomfort while using crutches. Now there will be no more complaints with using the Spring Action Crutch. |
